As mentioned in a previous post, it’s important to start reading to your child as soon as you can. Children often learn the most during those first 3 years of life, so it’s smart to get an early start when it comes to developing your child’s language. But, what are the best books for enhancing language in young children? Here are some of the best children’s books that I found for language development and self-esteem.
This is a best seller on Amazon and has amazing reviews! This is one book we have used a lot in our house. The story concerns a rabbit that is preparing for bed and says good night to everything in sight! This book combines wonderful illustrations and highly visible words to help grow your child’s vocabulary. In addition, one activity may involve asking your child to point to certain objects in the pictures, which again, can help grow your child’s attention skills, as well as vocabulary!
2.Pete the Cat
This is an absolute favorite in our house, as my daughter loves all of her Pete the Cat books! These books all have great reviews on Amazon, and most of them include a message about staying resilient (which can help with self-esteem). This particular book about Pete the Cat concerns his white shoes and how he walks down the street through strawberries and blueberries, thus, creating a mess of his shoes! However, Pete the Cat keeps going and grooving to his song, because it’s all good! This is such a fun book!
3.Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
Yet, another favorite in our house! This book has beautifully colored collages along with rhyme and repetition that should definitely appeal to young children! This book is definitely helpful for learning the names of animals and colors.
4.Giraffes Can’t Dance
This is a best seller on Amazon, and it also has excellent reviews! This story is about Gerald the giraffe who really wants to dance. At first, he doesn’t do so well at it, but he eventually can when he gets some encouraging words from a friend. This story is great inspiration for children, as well as potentially a self-esteem builder!
5.If Animals Kissed Goodnight
This is a best seller on Amazon and has great reviews! In this story, a young girl wonders how animals might say goodnight to each other. As stated in the description on Amazon, a line from the story is, “Would Wolf and his pup ‘kiss and then howl’? This book can get children thinking, as well as expand their language skills.
6.The Wonderful Things You Will Be
This is another best-seller on Amazon! This books expresses all the wonderful things that mothers think of when considering their children. Thus, this book may help children feel loved and valued. In addition, children are encouraged to be bold and creative. This is definitely a must have for parents to read to their children!
7.Blue Hat, Green Hat
This is another favorite in our house! There are three animals and a turkey that are learning colors and clothes, although the turkey doesn’t always get it quite right (as in putting his jacket on backwards). This is a great book for learning colors and about clothes, and it’s a fun read. My daughter always giggles when I read it!
8.The Little Engine that Could
Ok, so I had to add this one if we are talking about self-esteem! The train is carrying lots of toys and gets to a mountain that seems impossible to pass. The toys are not at all helpful to the train, saying, “I can not.” So, it’s up to the train to get over the mountain. Thus, in comes the saying, “I think I can, I think I can.” This should help positive thinking and resilience in the minds of young children!
9.Ricky, the Rock that Couldn’t Roll
In this story, there is a group of rocks that get together to play and roll on their favorite hill. However, there is one rock that can’t roll, because it is flat on one side. The other rocks are determined not to leave their friend behind, so they come to help the rock. Thus, this books teaches the power of friendship, as well as the importance of perseverance in the face of obstacles (When children learn this, it helps build resilience and self-esteem, as they build on their accomplishments).
10. I Like Myself!
This book has great reviews on Amazon! Generally, it encourages children to appreciate everything about themselves. It also gives off a sense of high energy and imagination! Definitely a must have book to help develop self-esteem in young children!
Reading a book to a child is a cherished activity, but it can also have wide reaching benefits. These include enhancing language and even self-esteem. I know it can be overwhelming to try to wade through all of the books to find the best ones. So, I thought this could help you narrow down the possibilities if you are looking for the best ones in terms of language and self-esteem enhancement. Hope this helps!!
