I’ll be honest, I have been at a loss as to how I can help my child read. I know her teachers are helping, but I want to play a role in it too. So, the question is do I teach her letter sounds? Do I teach her sight words? Well, I recently came upon an opportunity to try out a MyLibook series that helps young children (ages 4-6) with reading. Thus, I wanted to explain how this went for us and how it helped my daughter learn to read. I believe this book series can help you teach your child how to read at home!
Here is the book series that we received:
It comes as a series of 7 books, and they are all personalized. When I ordered these books, I got to pick the main character, which of course is my daughter. I also was able to pick what she looked like out of several options, as well as what color she would be (her dress, which is blue). Let me just say, she has thoroughly enjoyed this series, and she has picked up a few sight words on the way, such as “dog” and “cat.” Here she is enjoying the book with grandpa:
At the beginning of each book, there are several sight words that we can talk about. It also matches some of the main sight words with a picture- So the word “cat” is paired with a picture of a cat. There are also other sight words that we can work on such as “I”, “sat”, and “am.” There are also good discussion questions at the end of each book, and there are spaces where your child can add some extra color to the pages!
So, how do these books help? Well, one study showed that children were better able to acquire words that were in personalized sections of books than non-personalized sections of books. Even as adults, we remember information much better if we can attach some personal meaning to it. Also, the personalized aspect of these books helps children become more engaged with the story, and therefore, it increases the motivational factor.
The illustrations and the storylines were also cute and fun! I got some giggles out of my daughter when we read them together! And not to mention, this book series does reinforce what your child is learning in school.
